What is the Indian Military Academy (IMA)?
The IMA is a premier military academy in India established in 1932. It was founded to train officers for the Indian Army, and its first Commandant was Brigadier L.P. Collins. Over the years, IMA has become a symbol of excellence, producing some of the finest military leaders who have served the nation with honor and courage.
Where is the IMA Located?
IMA is situated in the picturesque city of Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, the academy is surrounded by serene natural beauty. Its location provides an inspiring and disciplined environment for cadets to focus on their training.
Training at the IMA
The training at IMA is rigorous and designed to prepare gentlemen cadets (GCs) for the challenges of leading troops in various operational environments. Here’s what the training involves:
1. Physical Fitness
Cadets undergo intense physical training to build endurance, strength, and agility. This includes:
- Obstacle courses
- Long runs
- Weapon handling and firing drills
2. Academics
Leadership requires strategic thinking and sound knowledge. The IMA curriculum covers military tactics, strategy, and history. Cadets also learn about geopolitics and international relations to prepare for modern warfare.

Ethics and integrity are core values at IMA. The training ensures that cadets develop a strong moral compass and an unwavering commitment to duty.
4. Field Training
Practical field training prepares cadets for real-world challenges. They learn navigation, survival skills, and how to operate in different terrains and climates.
Life at IMA
Life at IMA is disciplined and structured. A typical day starts early with physical training and includes classes, drills, and other activities. Despite the demanding schedule, cadets form lifelong bonds with their batchmates and instructors. These friendships often become a source of strength throughout their military careers.
Iconic Traditions at IMA
The IMA is steeped in tradition. Here are some iconic events and symbols:
1. The Chetwode Motto
The academy’s guiding principle is engraved in the Chetwode Hall and serves as a code of conduct for officers:
“The safety, honour, and welfare of your country come first, always and every time. The honour, welfare, and comfort of the men you command come next. Your own ease, comfort, and safety come last, always and every time.”
2. Passing Out Parade (POP)
The POP is the most awaited event at IMA. It marks the culmination of a cadet’s training and their commissioning as an officer. Families and dignitaries witness this grand ceremony, making it a proud moment for everyone involved.
3. Antim Pag
The final step, or Antim Pag, is a ceremonial walk over the drill square during the POP. It symbolizes the cadet’s transition into an officer of the Indian Army.
